DePaul Loses Basketball Letterwinner Ed Curtin

Ed Curtin - DePaul Men's Basketball Alum - 1953-56
DePaul men’s basketball alum Ed Curtin passed away on Wednesday, August 12. Curtin played for DePaul Legend Ray Meyer, lettering for the Blue Demons from 1953-56. As a senior he captained DePaul to a 16-8 mark scoring 6.9 points per game while playing alongside Blue Demon standouts Bill Robinzine, Sr., Dick Heise and Ron Sobieszcyk.

That 1955-56 team advanced to the NCAA, dropping a 72-63 match-up against Wayne State. The Blue Demon squad faced a formidable slate that included two wins over Notre Dame, a season split with Kentucky, a win over NCAA-bound Manhattan, and a loss to No. 1 ranked San Francisco who were led by basketball legend Bill Russell.

Visitation for Edward T. Curtin, 74, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 185 E. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the funeral home, proceeding to St. Theresa Church, for a Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. Born Dec. 29, 1934, in Chicago, he died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009.

Ed was a 1952 Fenwick graduate and a graduate of DePaul University, where he was co-captain of the basketball team in 1956. He was the Mid-Suburban League Basketball Assignment Chairman since 1992 and a substitute teacher for Districts 211 and 214. Edward was a second lieutenant for the Army. He enjoyed golf and was an avid Cubs fan.

He was very proud of his family.
